On the opening weekend of Notting Hill Carnival, Monolithic Theatre returns with an evening celebrating the literature, music and cinema that continue to shape the Black Atlantic.
Four Carnival brings together a new generation of playwrights responding to the poetry and essays of Roger Robinson, the evocative writing of Caleb Azumah Nelson, the enduring musical legacy of Celia Cruz, and the timeless imagery of the classic film Black Orpheus.
Developed especially for this edition, emerging writers transform poetry, prose, music and film into four original theatrical works, creating intimate, contemporary performances that explore memory, migration, identity, love, family, rhythm, joy and belonging.
Rather than recreating Carnival, Four Carnival explores the artistic influences that have shaped its spirit across generations. From the poetry of contemporary Britain to Afro-Caribbean storytelling, from Afro-Latin music to one of cinema’s most celebrated depictions of Brazilian culture, each performance becomes a conversation across the Black and Latin diaspora.
