We are celebrating the launch of our Friday Jazz concerts at Ladbroke Hall. Acclaimed saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev put together a band consisting of award-winning saxophonist, Soweto Kinch, upcoming young vocalist Lucy-Anne Daniels, pianist Tim Lapthorn (Eddie Henderson, Bobby Wellins), bassist Oli Hayhurst (Pharoah Sanders Quartet) and drummer Shane Forbes (Empirical).
Soweto Kinch
Soweto Kinch is a British jazz saxophonist, rapper, and composer. Largely self-trained he drew inspiration from the influential player/band leader Courtney Pine. At 1, Kinch met with Wynton Marsalis that pushed his musical mind. Since he has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003. In 2007, he won his second MOBO Award at the O2 Arena in London where he was announced as the winner in the Best Jazz Act category- fending off stiff competition from the likes of Wynton Marsalis.
His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world: having supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele and TY, and being championed by the likes of Mos Def, Rodney P and BBC 1-Xtra’s Twin B.

Zhenya Strigalev
Since graduating from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music, where he was invited on the full scholarship, Zhenya has cut a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. He’s worked with some of today’s most forward thinking musicians (including Eric Harland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Lefebvre, Chris “Daddy” Dave, Alex Sipiagin, William Parker, Aaron Parks, Joseph “Foley” McCreary from Miles Davis fame, Larry Grenadier) and has appeared at many prestigious jazz festivals and concert venues, performing extensively in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Britain, Switzerland, Chile, Argentina, Peru…He has recorded more than 6 albums with his groups Smiling Organizm, Never Group, JZ Replacement. His music is played on BBC radio as well as national radio stations in Austria, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Australia, France. He enjoys the challenge of shining a light on the undiscovered, and describes the desired on-the-edge thrill that unfolds: “The whole point of what I do is that I need to surprise myself”.
Lucy-Anne Daniels
A natural performer, creative improviser and talented musician, Leeds native Lucy-Anne Daniels draws inspiration from singers such as Betty Carter, Joni Mitchel, Steve Wonder.
At the age of sixteen, Lucy-Anne became the lead vocalist for the band at the close of 2019. Since then, she has performed at various venues and festivals across the country, most memorably a hometown gig which saw her return to the historic Leeds Town Hall. In September 2020, Lucy-Anne began studying jazz voice at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Being a vivid storyteller and creative improviser, whose rich vocals effortlessly weave her through an array of styles helped her to established herself as one of the most exciting artists to emerge on UK jazz scene.
