New Zealand composer and pianist Jonathan Crayford debuts his new project, Transformations, at Ladbroke Hall — joined by Zhenya Strigalev on saxophone, Orlando le Fleming on bass, and Ernesto Simpson on drums.
Crayford writes from a genuinely original place, running Afro-Cuban rhythm through a jazz sensibility that’s unmistakably his own. One of New Zealand’s most distinctive musical minds, he’s split his time between New York — playing with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mambo Macoco, Groove Collective — and Europe, working with David Murray and 3D Family. It’s a track record that says a lot about both his range and his instincts.

Bio
Jonathan Crayford has spent four decades building a reputation as one of the more original pianists and composers working today, picking up awards along the way. His credits include Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Murray, Groove Collective, and the Afro-Cuban outfit Mambo Macoco, plus a run of film soundtrack work. One critic said his music “leaves you gasping at its beauty, richness and assuredness.” Mike Nock put it more simply: “A huge talent, Jonathan is a true original who explores creative musical opportunities, when or wherever they might arise. I consider him to be one of the very finest creative musical talents to have ever come from Aotearoa.”
