New Delhi-based artists Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra present Arboretum, their first solo exhibition with Carpenters. The exhibition explores brass as a material connected to memory, history and knowledge, bringing together sculpture, painting and craft.

Inspired by the experience of being surrounded by trees, the artists combine handmade and industrial techniques to create a symbolic botanical garden. The works draw on their interest in ecology, climate change, migration and their family history in Punjab.

The exhibition is inspired by a visit to the Adinatha Perumal Temple in Tamil Nadu, where the artists encountered a 5,000-year-old sacred tamarind tree. This experience led to a series of five functional brass sculptures, each decorated with detailed imagery of sacred trees, including the tamarind, silk cotton and neem.

The exhibition also features two oil paintings on canvas, inspired by the artists’ memories of sitting beneath sacred trees. Through detailed and fragmented imagery, the works connect nature with technology, mythology and memory.

Together, the sculptures and paintings reflect Thukral and Tagra’s research-driven practice, exploring how trees can hold stories about memory, belief, politics and place.
