In the new exhibition Small Car, Big Windows, French artists and designers Martin Laforêt and Léa Mestres explore how travel and changing landscapes shape the way we see and experience the world. Presented at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, the exhibition brings together new sculptural furniture and lighting works that reflect the artists’ lives moving between Paris and Brittany, where the contrasts between urban concrete environments and the natural countryside influence their creative practices.
The exhibition’s title refers to the relationship between perspective and observation, exploring how movement through different environments can shape emotion, mood and experience. While Laforêt and Mestres usually work independently, Small Car, Big Windows places their practices in conversation through a series of complementary works.
Laforêt presents architecturally inspired pieces in concrete, steel and wood, informed by industrial landscapes and motorway structures. Mestres, meanwhile, brings a playful and expressive approach through colourful mosaic lighting and sculptural forms inspired by fields, skies and organic textures. Together, the exhibition balances structure and spontaneity, highlighting the contrasts and transitions of contemporary life.
