Flights of Fancy is an exhibition by British ceramic artist Gareth Mason, known for his tactile and experimental approach to the ceramic vessel. Opening at Carpenters in London, the exhibition features seven new works that explore porcelain, stoneware, glazes and granite through wheel-throwing, hand-building and multiple firings.

Drawing on ceramics’ long history and traditions, Mason challenges ideas of purity, perfection and function. His works embrace risk, transformation and chance, often leaving the effects of firing visible. This sense of flux reflects both the geological processes behind his materials and the personal transformations they can evoke.

Works such as Quarry, Dolomea and Obsidra combine familiar vessel forms with fractured surfaces, embedded granite, metallic elements and flowing glazes. The results are objects that feel both ancient and futuristic—part sculpture, part vessel, and constantly caught between control and collapse.

Flights of Fancy reflects Mason’s belief in ceramics as a powerful expressive medium. His work balances delicacy with force, tradition with experimentation, and beauty with disruption.
