Mumbai-based designer and artist Ashiesh Shah presents Taamr, his first solo exhibition in the UK, showing a new body of works anchored by copper as both a material and an idea. Opening at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, the exhibition features sculptures woven, held or structured in copper that reflect current explorations of form, material and concept by a pioneering contemporary designer.

Drawing on influences that span centuries and continents, Gunjan Gupta Shah combines traditional Indian craftsmanship with a contemporary sculptural language. Working closely with artisans across India, she celebrates and revitalises regional craft traditions, from Longpi pottery and Channapatna woodwork to Dhokra metal casting. Her latest body of work centres on taamr (Sanskrit for copper), a material she approaches as a symbol of transformation. Rather than preserving copper in a pristine state, Shah embraces its ability to age, oxidise and evolve, allowing time, touch and use to become part of the work itself.

This exploration takes shape through a series of geometric, materially rich pieces that connect craft, memory and modernity. Works such as Brahmand Cabinet pair antique copper vessels with black granite, reimagining traditional forms through a contemporary lens, while the Mirror Mosaic and Dveep coffee tables draw on jewellery-making techniques and Mumbai’s island geography. In Matka Mobile and Matka Mirror, handcrafted earthen pots are transformed into sculptural compositions inspired by celestial movement. Together, the works highlight copper’s enduring relevance, using the material to reflect on heritage, change and new ways of seeing the familiar.
