Which artist has the most to teach us? Which artist has best inspired other great artists? Which artist inspires you?

Led by art historians Ben Street and Lizzie Perrotte, we will put two artists from the past head-to-head to compare their practices and to argue their relevance for our times. In our first discussion, Ben and Lizzie will explore Van Gogh’s work compared to that of Paul Cézanne. The debate will culminate in a final vote, where the audience decides the “winning” artist.

We ask you to consider: what can the work of two early modern artists such as Cézanne and Van Gogh teach us about relating to the environment in the 21st century? Whose work gets you closer to Nature? Which artist stimulates your senses more deeply?

We anticipate this will be a close-run debate as both these artists are considered great pioneers of modern and contemporary art; they have inspired abstract and expressionist practices across the past century, touching the work of acclaimed artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Tracey Emin. We will provide fresh insights into ways Cézanne and Van Gogh developed a radical visual language to capture the spirit of nature.
