Join historian and anthropologist Luke Pepera for a wide-ranging journey through half a million years of African history — from the rise of ancient empires to the roots of modern culture.
This talk explores the lives and legacies of iconic figures like Mansa Musa, once the richest man in the world, and Queen Njinga Mbande, who resisted colonial powers with courage and strategy. It also traces the African origins of contemporary art forms like rap and examines how African ideas, innovation and identity have shaped the world we live in.
Spanning continents, centuries and cultures, this is an evening that brings depth, clarity and energy to a story too often overlooked — and offers a powerful rethinking of how we see Africa, past and present.
Held in partnership with Geist, a cultural forum with a focus on staging live talks. Geist aims to champion a new generation of public intellectuals, alongside more established figures.
Book Pollini at Ladbroke Hall for a table after the talk here.
