‘Gerry’s Pompeii’ by Stella Scott.

‘Gerry’s Pompeii’ was built by Gerald Dalton over thirty years in his council flat on Hormead Road, West London. Although Gerry was well known by his neighbours, the extent of this artwork was only discovered following his death in 2019. This documentary (60mins) follows their three year fight to keep Gerry’s Pompeii in situ.

‘Pompeii’ by Jacek Zmarz and Louis Harris-White.

Capturing the undisturbed collection shortly after his passing, London-based filmmakers Jacek Zmarz and Louis Harris-White document the space and the stories that brought it into being in short film Pompeii – existing as one of the few records of “Gerry’s Pompeii” in its entirety.

Alongside Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral, reimagined, a vast display of historical figures, from Oliver Cromwell to Prince Albert, are committed to concrete. One figure receives special attention: Colonel Harry Rice, an important inspiration from Dalton’s past working as a gardener in Ireland. Read by the Colonel’s granddaughter, Gerardine Wisdom, Dalton’s own words guide Pompeii, taken from his only formal interview – compiled with friend and neighbour, the writer, artist and environmentalist Roc Sandford. Touring this unique visionary environment through Dalton’s memories and musings, Zmarz and Harris-White capture the possibilities of uninhibited creative expression, as it unfolds in the comfort, privacy and, at times, isolation of home.
