Tereza Catarov is a Romanian-born, London-based singer, pianist, composer and storyteller whose work traces a powerful emotional and cultural arc between contemporary jazz and the folk traditions of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. With roots in both Romanian and Bulgarian heritage, her music is shaped by the voices, songs and rituals she grew up with—transformed through a modern creative lens that embraces improvisation, cinematic harmony and rhythmic complexity.

From a young age, Tereza was immersed in music: she began singing at folk festivals at the age of three and studied classical piano from the age of five. Growing up in a multicultural environment in western Romania, she absorbed the melodic contours of Romanian doinas, the hypnotic asymmetry of Bulgarian rhythms, and the communal storytelling spirit embedded in village song. These early influences would later become the foundation of her artistic identity.

Her debut album, Koren, released in 2025, draws on the stories of the women in her childhood community—particularly her grandmothers and the elder women who preserved songs, language and cultural memory. Sung in part in the endangered Paulician dialect, the album weaves fragments of family history with contemporary jazz aesthetics. Critics praised Koren for its emotional depth and striking originality, earning four-star reviews in both Jazzwise and Songlinesmagazine, as well as airplay on radio.
