“Cohen takes a softly devious approach reminiscent of Lee Konitz – but, as with the canny Cool School veteran, the quietness is deceptive and the subtlety is in the weighting of phrases and the hipness with which she plays off the rhythm section.”The Guardian

Rachael Cohen is widely recognised as one of the leading saxophonists on the London jazz scene. Her dynamic career has seen her collaborate with an extraordinary range of musicians from around the world – most recently performing with the New York supergroup ARTEMIS. She holds a long-standing residency at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and has twice been named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll.

London-based alto saxophonist and composer Rachael Cohen is one of the most compelling and original voices of her generation. Equally acclaimed for her lyrical writing and imaginative improvisation, she has built a reputation that resonates far beyond the UK. Originally from the Shetland Islands, Rachael began studying piano at the age of four and discovered the saxophone at nine, quickly developing a love for improvisation. As lead alto saxophonist in both the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra, she gained invaluable early experience performing with leading British and international artists on major stages throughout the UK.

In 2012 she recorded her debut album Halftime for Whirlwind Recordings. Released in 2013 and featuring renowned guitarist Phil Robson, the album received widespread critical acclaim, earning four-star reviews across the board and a place in MOJO Magazine’s Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2014. Its success firmly established Cohen as one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary jazz.
