Vibraphonist Nat Steele brings his quartet to play at Ladbroke Hall, paying homage to one of the jazz supergroups of the 20th century, the Modern Jazz Quartet. As a special guest, tenor saxophonist Alex Garnett will join them to perform tunes from the classic album “Sonny Rollins and the MJQ”

Nat’s quartet performs the music of one of the most successful and influential jazz groups in the history of the music, the MJQ, breathing new life into the 3rd stream genre and putting a new spin on classic repertoire. Joining him are the young pianist Matyas Gayer (Jim Rotundi, Eddie Henderson), rising star Italian bassist Lorenzo Morabito (Renato D’Aiello, Giacomo Smith) and Steve Brown (Benny Golson, Scott Hamilton) on drums. The gig will feature tunes from their album, among them such stellar favourites such as ‘Django’, ‘Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise’, ‘Bags Groove’, and a complete performance of ‘La Ronde Suite’.

A refreshing treat for the ears” Rebecca Franks (BBC Music, Album of the Month)

Bio

Nat is a jazz vibraphone player based in London. He launched his debut album, “Portrait of the Modern Jazz Quartet” on Trio Records with a sold-out album release concert held at Ronnie Scott’s, followed by 2 years of performing around the UK with the quartet at venues such as Cadogan Hall, Theatr Clwyd, and the Royal Festival Hall. The album was awarded Jazz Album of the Month by BBC Music Magazine, with an array of glowing reviews in the jazz press, including 4 stars in The Observer and Jazzwise Magazine. It even made it into the top 10 of the jazz charts in Japan.

He was invited by Grammy-award winning pianist, arranger and composer Alan Broadbent (Shirley Horn, Chet Baker) to give the world premier of a new work celebrating the 25th anniversary of Watermill Jazz, with the music composed specifically with Nat in mind as the performer. More recently, he completed an 18-date Arts Council funded tour of the UK with the MJQ band featuring guest tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart, who came from New York for 2 weeks to play.

Pianist Matyas Gayer moved to the UK from Hungary in 2018 and has quickly established himself as a sideman with many of the UK’s most prominent jazz artists. He’s twice been a finalist in the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano competition and played extensively around Europe with US jazz stars like Eddie Henderson, and will appear on Nat’s album with Scott Hamilton.

Despite his young age, Italian double bassist Lorenzo Morabito has been working for several years with the cream of the crop of jazz musicians around the UK and Europe, having become a first-call bass player on the British jazz scene since the pandemic.

Multi award-winning drummer Steve Brown moved from his home town of Manchester to London in 1996 and immediately became first call sideman with many of the capital’s finest musicians, including engagements with Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison and Conte Candoli. He’s a member of Scott Hamilton’s quartet and appears on Concorde and other major labels. Between engagements with Scott Hamilton, Steve has performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists including Benny Golson, Benny Green, Barry Harris, Junior Mance, Charles McPherson, John Bunch and Hod O’Brien.
