A new musical partnership from London between reedman Giacomo Smith and singer Lucy Anne Daniels based around the legendary musical interplay between Lester Young and Billie Holiday. Young and Holiday mirrored each other’s tone, with the raspy reediness of Holiday’s voice blending seamlessly into the creamy lyricism of Young’s saxophone.
The prime example of their synergy can be witnessed in their last known appearance together on the CBS special, The Sound of Jazz riffing off each other on “Fine and Mellow”. Young made his last recordings in Paris in 1959 and thus has an indelible connection to the City of Light. Both artists passed away far too young in 1959 leaving behind a recorded legacy that surely equates to one of the most singular musical partnerships in jazz history. For these unique performances at Le Duc Des Lombards their partnership will be alive once more.
Giacomo Smith – reeds,
