Moments in Time: A Photographic Journey 1972 to 2024
This exhibition presents a wide-ranging selection of work by Scott Mead, spanning over five decades of photographic practice. From early studies of New England landscapes to recent reflections on nature and place, Moments in Time traces the evolution of an artist deeply committed to the act of seeing.
Mentored in the 1970s by renowned photographers William Eggleston, Emmet Gowin, and Minor White, Mead developed a visual language rooted in formal precision and emotional clarity.
He began photographing seriously in his early teens and continued into his late twenties, before stepping back to focus on family and a career in finance. Photography remained a constant during this period, and over twenty years ago, he returned to it full-time. His vision, shaped by life experience and sustained curiosity, has remained remarkably consistent.
The works on view span several series, each offering a distinct lens on themes of memory, transition, and perception. In Looking Back and Rites of Passage, large-format black-and-white photographs evoke personal and cultural transformation. Above the Clouds captures the meditative space of air travel, while Equivalents explores subtle dialogues between the natural and built environments. In Thoughts For My Children, image and text come together in a moving meditation on family and legacy.
Other works—such as The Oriental Plane, Silent Moments, and To Look at Things in Bloom—invite close observation, stillness, and wonder in the everyday. Throughout, Mead’s photographs are marked by a quiet attentiveness to light, texture, and the passage of time.
This is the first exhibition to bring these varied bodies of work together in one space. Their dialogue reveals not only the breadth of Mead’s artistic range, but a unifying spirit of contemplation and connection.
All proceeds from print and book sales are donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity in London, in gratitude for the care the institution provided to Mead’s child many years ago.
